Theatre Work Experience

Is Work Experience at The Theatre for you?

  • Are you in Year 10, Sixth Form or College?
  • Do you love theatre and want to gain experience in the industry?
  • Are you interested in how a professional theatre runs?
  • Are you interested in the different departments that make up a theatre?

What Can We Offer?

General Placements

Our general placement dips into as many facets of The Theatre as is possible during your time with us. You will experience a range of administrative and marketing tasks, observation of Take Part sessions, and a night of Ushering a live performance (where scheduling permits).

Technical Placements

On occasion, we can offer a placement with our incredible technical team, where you might experience a Get-In for a live show or assist with the lighting and sound checks. These placements are dependent on capacity and events running during the requested time.

Participation Focus

If you are particularly interested in working with young people or other members of the community, we can tailor your experience to focus on participation by working with our Take Part department. You might observe or assist in some of our term-time sessions or holiday workshops, as well as work on tasks behind the scenes that help to make everything happen!

Marketing Focus

If you have an interest in marketing, you might work closely with our marketing team, learning about creation of social media assets, content creation or campaign planning.

Additional Support

We welcome applications for work experience from young people with additional needs. Please talk to us about adaptations we can make to support you in joining us for a placement, and we will do our best to accommodate them.

What Can't We Offer?

We are primarily a receiving theatre, and therefore we do not offer any acting opportunities, and we do not have costume, make-up or set-building and props departments.

Placement Timing

Placement offers are always dependent on The Theatre’s schedule. As a busy working theatre, there will be times of the year where we are unable to accommodate a work experience student.

In some cases, we may be able to offer a full week, in others we may only be able to offer a two-day or three-day placement. We are always keen to offer the most interesting and fulfilling experience possible, so our ability to offer a placement may also be based on what events are taking place at The Theatre during the dates requested.

Please note that we receive a high volume of Work Experience requests, so our response time can sometimes be slow. We often receive a high number of requests for the same dates, which affects how many places we are able to offer during that time. We will always give priority to requests that demonstrate a genuine interest in drama and theatre.

Getting Involved at The Theatre

Duke of Edinburgh Volunteering

We also offer opportunities to join us for Duke of Edinburgh Volunteering. The opportunities we offer depend on age but can also be tailored to interests (dependent on capacity). Previous volunteers have ushered live shows and films or assisted with Youth Theatre or Youth Musical Theatre groups.

If you are interested in a DofE placement, it is vital to include your availability, as well as how many hours of volunteering you must complete, when you submit your request.

Volunteering as an Usher

We are always on the lookout for Volunteer Ushers! You can find out more by clicking here.
