The Glass Menagerie
by Tennessee Williams
Playing at The Theatre
Spring 2013
Tom is torn between family loyalty and a desire to break away from his suffocating mother, Amanda. Comforting herself with recollections of her younger years, pursued by ‘gentlemen callers’, Amanda now lives out her dreams through the romantic fortunes of a grown-up
daughter - the shy, crippled Laura. Will the gentleman who calls tonight change their lives forever?
Our powerful new production re-imagines Tennessee Williams’ autobiographical classic in a deserted 1940’s Hollywood film studio, a world he inhabited as he wrote this play. In a tangle of humming film lights, old pianos and curling celluloid, Tom, now a successful scriptwriter, takes us back into memory: a family home, a crippled sister, an overwrought mother and a knock at the door.
