RAN KAN KAN
06 May 2023
Ran Kan Kan is Oxford’s Cuban-style big band, born in 2011 from a meeting of local brass and latin percussion fanatics. Chanteuses Karla Peña and Melisa Akdogan are supported by an impressive brass section (listen out for Sam Tusk on trombone, and Finlay Dove on trumpet), flutes, saxophones and a funky 5-piece rhythm section.
The funky mambos and sophisticated son montuno rhythms will have your feet tapping. Add melodies of heart-stopping beauty, and you have all the ingredients of the passionate music from the golden years of Cuban big-band music made famous by Buena Vista Social Club, and giants of salsa like Tito Puente.
Be warned – you will want to dance.
