Adapted by Giles Croft from the novel by Melvin Burgess
From the company that brought us Dancing in My Dreams and Rivers Up we are delighted to present Oxfordshire Theatre Company’s latest show, Loving April; catch it here before it heads off around the country.
This is a love story and a powerful portrayal of a young woman, trapped in a world of silence, facing the brutal intolerance and strict, social values of 1920’s England.
Karen Simpson (Artistic Director, Oxfordshire Theatre Company) said “This is such an exciting collaboration for the Company. The book captured my imagination many years ago because of its beautiful and sensitive portrayal of young deaf teenager, April, and the strict social setting of the 1920’s. I have always wanted to turn it into a piece of theatre and was delighted when I approached Giles Croft to write the adaptation, that he too was excited by the uniqueness of this project. Melvin Burgess is celebrated as a wonderful story teller and is well known for tackling difficult subject matters within his novels. We have drawn together a dynamic creative team to work on this new play and I expect the production to have a profound resonance on audiences of all ages.”
